Lea Lewis

Lea Lewis began her art career in Pennsylvania where she studied at the Pittsburgh Art Institute.  She continued her education in Ohio and recieved a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Ohio Wesyleyan University in Delaware where she was inducted into Delta Phi Delta, the art honorary, her junior year.

Lea continued her education at the University of Cincinnati, Wittenberg University, Ohio Northern University, and the University of Utah.  She taught art in the public school system in Logan county for ten years, and in 1972 opened her own art business, Drift Inn Studio, in Lakeview, Ohio.  Since closing the store in 1979, she has devoted much of her time to painting.

Lea has continued to study art nationally and locally and her work appears in many juried and non-juried exhibitions.  Her work appears in collections throughout Ohio, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Florida, Texas, and Japan.  Her paintings are highly imaginative and include a variety of subject matter, ranging from representational to abstract and non-objective in style.  She has won numerous awards including several “Best of Shows”.

“My philosophy of art has been influenced by two artists I greatly admire;  Paul Cezanne said ‘To paint is not to copy the object slavishly, it is to grasp a harmony among many relationships.’
John Marin felt that ‘Painting is founded in the heart, controlled by the head.’  I find that I am a right brained sort of person, and most of the time my most successful paintings seem to tell me what they want to be.
Art has always been a major part of my life and I recieve great pleasure working with the water media I have come to love.  I love to work with colors and let them flow into a picture.  Texture has become quite fascinating to me recently and I love to mix paint with other substances.”
